Japan drug-pricing reform to get blueprint by year-end

26 November 2016 - The Japanese government will draw up an outline for a comprehensive revision of the country's prescription drug pricing system as part of efforts to curb rising medical costs.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Friday instructed the Council on Economic and Fiscal Policy to come up with a basic policy by the end of the year so that his government can start working toward changing the way the price of prescription drugs is set.

In Japan, where a public health insurance program shoulders a large portion of medical bills, prescription drug prices are set by the government.
