Paediatric drug and other shortages in the age of supply chain disruption

9 June 2023 - The last year witnessed several significant shortages of key medicines and other products for children, including children’s formulations of acetaminophen and ibuprofen as well as frontline antibiotics prescribed for common childhood ailments.

Infant formula, although not technically a drug, is also heavily regulated by the US FDA and has likewise seen problematic shortages. In some cases, the shortages are triggered by problems on the manufacturing side, resulting from globalisation, consolidations of manufacturing, and mismanagement; however, sometimes they constitute a failure to meet increased demands.
