Major review finds the harms of statins exaggerated and their benefits underestimated

9 September 2016 - Misleading reports warning patients off taking their cholesterol-lowering medicines have exaggerated their harms and underestimated their benefits, say the researchers of a major review published in The Lancet.

Claims that the HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (statins) cause high rates of serious side effects had dealt a "serious cost to public health", and had convinced some patients to stop taking their medication.
