This 12-year-old leukaemia survivor is fighting for equal access to medicine for all Canadians

17 May 2018 - Helena Kirk, a 12-year-old leukaemia survivor, helped spearhead a proposal to the Minister of Health with support from researchers across the country. She wears a necklace with 650 beads - one for each procedure she has endured.

In today’s golden age of cancer research, experimental therapies are curing tough-to-treat cancers like never before. But a child’s chances of receiving a potentially life-saving treatment may depend on whether he or she lives in the province where a clinical trial is taking place.

A group of advocates for paediatric cancer patients have made it their mission to change that. Their proposal to Health Canada, released Thursday, calls for $15-million in funding over five years to cover out-of-province medical costs associated with clinical trials for children, adolescents and young adults with cancer.
