VA and ICER at three years: critics' concerns answered

15 June 2020 - As part of its national formulary management process, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Pharmacy Benefits Management Services (PBM) critically evaluates published, peer-reviewed articles on pharmaceuticals as well as relevant data filed with the U.S. FDA and other information sources including that provided by industry partners. 

The finalised documents form the basis for formulary decision-making and implementing evidence-based prescribing guidance.

Although this process is robust, missing from these information resources was a reliable source of non-biased cost-effectiveness analysis—additional data that the VA PBM has desired for pharmaceutical assessments--as a means to better contextualise value for decision making on behalf of veteran patients and US tax payers.
